What Students Are Never Told After Graduating

Students often think their first job is exactly what they want or the line of profession chosen by them is apt for them. Trust us – this doesn’t always stand true. Yes, sky’s the limit once you graduate. Your mind is bustling with ideas and you want to conquer the world. You may do so – but that doesn’t mean that every step taken by you after graduation will be correct.

The point is even if you don’t get what you expect, you will always learn valuable lessons about work, relationships and life in general. The journey will not always be joyous. And there are going to be times when you will want to quit your job and move on to the next one.

So to make sure that you take thrill in each and every minute of your “professional life” from the start, here are 7 points you must always remember:

1. You will always start at the bottom

Millennials want instant gratification. They want a comfortable job, do less work and earn lots as soon as they start their professional lives. Unfortunately, the real world doesn’t work like that. You have to make your way up from the bottom. You have to struggle, find ways to enjoy life on a meagre salary and learn to take orders from a boss. It’s a tough couple of years – don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

2. Be humble and disciplined in office

Just because you bagged a job doesn’t mean you have the right to behave in whichever way you want to. Pay attention in meetings. Don’t text under the table. Your seniors can see you. Listen to whatever is being discussed during meetings.

Similarly, learn the art of writing emails. Explain everything clearly. Dummy proof your content, if need be. Use of mobile phones at work should be self-monitored. Hang up immediately if your colleague or superior comes and talks to you. Personal matters can wait. Your job can’t. The key is to respect. If you can’t give it. You won’t receive it. Simple.

3. You always need to work on your career

There are always going to be some segments of your professional life which will require work. Whether it is interpersonal relationships or self-discipline – you have to make an effort to get everything under control. No one else will do it for you. You are in charge of the ship. So don’t let it lose sense of direction or time.

4. One of your friend’s career will immediately skyrocket

Yup. And that’s going to hurt you. But don’t get disheartened if you are not able to make magic at the beginning of your career – just like your friend. It is OK. You are on a different path altogether, so it doesn’t matter who does what and earns how much.

Really – all this hardly matters when you reach a more stable stage in your life. The key is to keep working hard. Sooner or later – you will find success in what you truly enjoy doing. You will achieve everything BUT only when the time is right.

5. Never stop learning

Just because you have stopped going to college, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t study any further. With the constant changes in the market, it has become all the more necessary to enhance your skills, learn new trends, read and research to stay ahead of the game.

Try to sign up for job-related courses and training programs on a continuous basis. Soak in as much information as you can at every stage of your professional life. Remember: knowledge is power. It will never let you down.

6. Job is NOT just a job

As soon as you begin work as an intern or as a full-time employee, you will meet grumpy, tired but experienced professionals who will tell you things like “job is just a job for paying bills”. That is NOT true. You can always find a job you truly enjoy.

So don’t give this statement too much importance because such people will always crib and complain about their jobs. Believe us: If you are at the right place, doing the right kind of work – you will enjoy every minute of it and of course, also rake in lots of moolah to keep yourself happy! So, don’t forget to stay positive always.
