What’s next on the list? To find a suitable job!
That’s what almost everyone does, and so will you. You may assume that just because you have a commendable marksheet and favourable recommendation letters, getting a job in a desirable company will be a piece of cake.
You are wrong! The reality suggests something else.
The third edition of the National Employability Report, Engineering Graduates – 2014 revealed that only 18.33% of the engineering graduates are employable. Over 1.2 lac candidates were surveyed across multiple states.
The report threw light on shocking data – 73.63% had poor English speaking and comprehension skills, 91.82% lacked programming and algorithm skills, 71.23% didn’t have soft and cognitive skills and 57.96% lacked analytical and quantitative skills.
And all these skills come in handy at work – in some way or the other. So if you are planning to apply for a job anytime soon, here’s a checklist of “job readiness” skills you must inculcate:
1. Information technology
The ability to use computers and job-specific softwares and apply file management techniques is a prerequisite for working in any organization. Even today, most companies highlight this quality in the job descriptions.
You must be able to safely select and use technological resources to accomplish work responsibilities in a productive fashion. Don’t take your knowledge for granted. If you look at the Indian education system, it focuses much on theory.
Therefore, even if you have your textbook knowledge in place about a software, don’t brag about it. Try to apply that thinking and learn new things about it. The workplace is one big classroom where you get to learn by actually doing tasks.
2. Speaking and listening
If you have a problem in following instructions, then it is something you must improve. In addition to this, Speaking clearly and fluently will help you not only communicate well with your team but also customers.
Record your own voice or stand in front of the mirror and speak: work on your tone and diction. It’s important.
3. Reading and writing
Believe it or not but most people don’t know how to write an email! They either apply the wrong tone or make grammatical errors – which doesn’t exactly show them in a positive light. Besides this, you should also be able to read official documents and make some sense out of them.

4. Critical thinking
You must be able to analyze and resolve problems that arise during completion of tasks. Identifying the “big picture” issues and approaching them with logic is what you must strive to do. Read online publications that feature real-life office scenarios.
You will not become an expert by doing so, but you will definitely get an idea about the problems that can crop up and ways to deal with them.
5. Lifelong learning
Once you get a job doesn’t mean your “job” is done. In fact, it has just begun. You must keep yourself updated with new industry-related information and improve professional skills. The more self motivated and driven you are, the better it is.
Hence, keep a tab on news items about your field. There is nothing better than the power of knowledge.
6. Positive work ethics
Be punctual, take initiatives and motivate yourself to do your best at the work in hand. Be polite to your colleagues and superiors. Assist others when needed. Become an asset to the organization.
When you work with an organization, you should abide by its policies and laws without fail. Be reliable. Demonstrate honesty. You can’t grow integrity by simply reading about it. But you must remember how important it is once you step into the “real world”.
You are not a robot. If you didn’t have the chance to get creative in your academic life, then you now have the liberty to be as creative as possible at workplace. Throw in new ideas and experiment but get things done. Your superiors will appreciate your creative enthusiasm.
We would advise you to take all these skills seriously. You never know what might be useful to you and where. Work on yourself. Try to get out of your comfort zone and expand your thinking. It’s a long process but it is worth it if you really give yourself a chance to learn.
