According to Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), over 1.5 lac students sat for Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted on May 12 and May 13 this year. Held at 53 places, spread all over Karnataka, this competitive exam is carried out for the admission of students interested in taking up Medical, Engineering, Technology and Dental courses.
The KCET paper mostly comprises the 10+1 and 10+2 syllabus. With K-CET mock tests slated to begin from the month of October, tension is riding high on the minds of students who want to pursue a course of their choice in a renowned college of the state.
In addition to this, we are sure that most parents are also getting sleepless nights due to their children preparing for this exam. To make the K-CET preparation a breeze for the both parties, we have listed few “study and life” hacks. Have a read:
Prepare notes while studying
The minute you begin preparing for K-CET, make sure you don’t forget to take down notes. This will help you in last-minute revision before the test. Now there are many ways in which you can prepare innovative yet helpful notes:
- Visual means
Make notes using table diagrams, infographics or doodles. These will not only give you a breather from writing short sentences or phrases but also make the process more fun and interesting. Not only this, you will be easily able to retain more. Quick revision becomes easier and fruitful.
- Aural technique
Who says making notes means writing, writing and writing? If you are not a fan of pen and paper, make use of your phone. Every phone today has a recording feature. Speak while you study and in the process, record important facts, vocab meaning and formulae. Easy, isn’t?
- Creative outlets
Another way to make notes is by connecting a particular concept, fact, date or formula to a song, object or film. You can note down such connections in the form of points on a small notebook or laptop. Remembering a song is much easier during an exam than anything else, right?
Set strict timelines while preparing
K-CET comprises three sections—Math, Physics and Chemistry. Subsequently, medical aspirants sit for Biology and not Physics. All the four subjects are tough and have their own set of challenges. To ensure that your approach towards these subjects is smart and practice is fruitful, use the Pomodoro technique.
This technique is pretty easy. For every subject, devote 25 to 30 minutes. Solve couple of questions or learn a specific concept. Post this, take a break for 5 minutes. Repeat the process with another subject. Once the cycle is complete, repeat it.
The two good things you’ll get out of this:
- You are able to cover all the subjects every day, which means continuous practice.
- You follow a timeline for every subject which makes you cover more in a limited period of time.
Use varied testing mediums
Don’t just stick to your class 11th and 12th textbooks. Look for learning sources beyond that. There are many online educational sites that offer tutorials for this competitive exam. If you want to practice for it while on-the-go, try Oust app as they offer a humungous question bank and quizzes just for K-CET preparation.
Practice with speed
Speed is a factor since you have to solve 60 questions per subject in 80 minutes. This means you need to have your facts in place and of course, speed in your favor. The overall K-CET exam is of 180 marks each. 1 hour and 20 minutes are given to students for solving question paper of every subject.
Oust trains students for speed by setting time limits for each of the questions.
To get into the habit of solving more questions, set an alarm. If you don’t trust yourself, ask your parents to act as an invigilator when you’re giving a mock test or solving a set of questions. The faster you get into the habit of solving more questions in a budgeted time, the better it is for you.
Give all mock tests and previous years’ question papers
It is an important exercise that every aspirant must undergo. Solve as many question papers as you can while you are preparing for K-CET. This way, you will not only hone your skills in all subjects but also improve their problem-solving speed.
Install the Oust app and follow the Facebook page to get notified of all the mock tests it conducts to prepare you for the big day!
Help them take timed mock tests
Act as an invigilator when your child is taking a mock test or solving an old question paper. You don’t need to be strict with him or her. Basic supervision during tests will suffice. After all, you don’t want to act a helicopter parent, do you?
Help them create easy and innovative notes
The notes-making process is rather tedious which is why it is important to find fun ways to create some good content. You can actually lend a helping hand to your child when he or she is jotting down points, recording on the phone or making a chart.
As a parent, you have to support your child. Exam time is strenuous for students and it is important that you keep the atmosphere in the house cool and calm for your child. A pep talk with your child from time-to-time is a good idea. To ease the mind of your child, you can even take him or her for films or quick bites.
So, there it is—an easy guide to making sure students crack the K-CET exam like a pro. If any one of you, student or parent, has anything else to add, don’t hesitate to reach out to us through the Comments section.
